Ingredients

  • 5 apples, like Fuji apples
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup raisins optional
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot or cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 3 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the apples into 1/2 inch pieces or slices. Steam the apple pieces until soft. Take the apples off the stove. Mix in the raisins, the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 325F (160C). Butter a 9" pie pan.

  2. Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Cut in the butter and work with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the milk and water until it's a crumbly dough.

  3. Crumble half the dough into a greased pie pan. Don't pat down. Spread the apple mixture on top of the layer of dough. Crumble the remaining dough over the apple mixture. You can sprinkle the juice from the apple mixture over the dough.

Bake 40-45 minutes. Turn the oven off and let sit for another 10 minutes. Let the crumble pie cool down and sprinkle with confectioner sugar if desired.
