Three Irresistible Dutch Apple Pies You Must Try

If there’s one thing the Netherlands is famous for, it’s the delectable Dutch Apple Pie. The aroma of freshly baked apples and warm spices wafting through the air is simply irresistible. What makes it even more exciting is that there are countless ways to make this delightful dessert. Today, I’m thrilled to share three of my all-time favorite Dutch Apple Pie recipes.

1. The Traditional Dutch Apple Pie

The first one is the Traditional Apple Pie. This one has crust which resembles a bread dough kind of crust.

The first on our list is the timeless classic – the Traditional Dutch Apple Pie. A golden-brown, bread-like crust holding a generous mound of cinnamon-infused apples. It’s a masterpiece that has been gracing Dutch tables for generations.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the Netherlands, be on the lookout for this one in local restaurants and bistro menus. Served warm, with a scoop of velvety vanilla ice cream and an extra dollop of whipped cream on the side. In other words, it’s Apple Pie a la mode, the Dutch way!

2. The Sweet and Secretive Apple Pie

Next up, we have the Sweet Apple Pie, a delightful twist on the classic. What sets this version apart is its crumbly, crunchy topping and a secret ingredient that elevates the filling to a whole new level. Trust me; this one’s my absolute favorite!

But I can assure you it’s what makes this pie truly special. With every bite, you’ll savor the sweet, slightly tart apples perfectly balanced by the irresistible crunch of the topping. It’s a harmonious symphony of flavors that will have you reaching for seconds and thirds.

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
resting time 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes
Servings 8 people

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour 400 gram
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3/4 cup milk + 2 TBSP
  • 2 packages yeast or 25 gram fresh yeast
  • 6 tbsp butter 50 gram
  • 3 tbsp sugar 35 gram
  • 7 apples (Fuji) or other sour variant
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 430 F.

  2. Sift the flour and salt into a big bowl. Preferably in a stand up mixer.

Warm up the milk until it is lukewarm in a sauce pan. Take the sauce pan off the heat source. Add the yeast and stir until it's dissolved.

Add the sugar and the butter in cubes to the flour.

Knead the dough and add bit by bit the yeast/milk mixture to the dough. The dough should be soft.

Cover the dough with plastic or a towel and let it rest for 1 hour.

You can put the ingredients (fluids first) in a bread making machine and turn on the dough cycle. It takes about 1 1/2 hours

  3. Grease a pie pan with a removable bottom part

Knead the dough for a little more by hand and cut it in 2 parts. 1/3 for the top and 2/3 for the bottom.

Roll the dough out with some flour and cover the bottom of the pie pan. Cut off excess dough.

Cover the dough with plastic or a towel and let rest for another 30 minutes.

  4. In the meantime peel and cut the apples in slices. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over the apple slices and toss carefully.

  5. Make a few holes with a fork in the dough in the pie pan and spread the apple slices over the bottom.

Roll out the dough for the top and lay on top of the apples. Pinch the dough together on the side of the pie. Cut V’s in the dough with scissors and brush a little water with some sugar on the top.

  6. Bake the pie for about 30 minutes on 430 F. Let the pie cool down and serve with ice cream and/or whipped cream

    ENJOY!!!

Sweet Apple Pie

Personally I love this Apple Pie. Warm it up and dust the top with a little powdered sugar or some vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. Yummm!

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
rest time 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings 8 people

Ingredients

  • 8 small apples, like Fuji apples
  • 1/2 cup raisins 60 gr
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar 100 gr
  • 3 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp custard powder secret ingredient
  • 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs 40 gr
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 420 gr
  • 14 tbsp cold butter 200 gr
  • 1/2 cup sugar 160 gr
  • 1 egg whisked
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Use a food processor or your hands to crumble the cold butter with the flour, sugar and salt. Add 2/3 of a whisked egg to the mix. Use the other 1/3 for brushing the pie at the end, before it goes into the oven.

  2. Knead the dough until it sticks together. Add a little water or milk until the dough holds together. It still can be a little crumbly. Cover with plastic and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

  3. Peel the apples and slice them in thin slices. Mix with the brown sugar, raisins and custard powder. Set aside.

  4. Preheat the oven 350 F (or 180 C).

Grease a 9" pie dish with removable bottom. Roll out 2/3 of the dough to cover the bottom and sides of the pie dish. You might need to add some of the 1/3 part of the dough. Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the bottom. This will absorb the excess juice from the apples.

  5. Spread the apple slices over the dough, without the juice. Use the rest of the dough to make a grid over the apples. Brush the rest of the whisked egg on top and bake for 1 hour.

Let cool, serve with ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream or just some powdered sugar and SMAKELIJK ETEN!!!

I like Fuji apples in the USA the best to use for these apple pies, but any kind will work.
