During my first fall season in the United States, I realized a funny thing. An “ACORN” translated in Dutch is “EIKEL” (which is also a swear word by the way :p) and “EEKHOORN” in Dutch means “SQUIRREL”. You pronounce “EEKHOORN” almost the same as “ACORN”. Find out how to make these fun Acorn Puppets below.
IT WAS SOOO CONFUSING! Every time I saw those little nuts lying around and people around me were talking about “ACORNS”, I kept thinking, they were talking about “SQUIRRELS”.
I love the fall season here in Iowa. The trees are so beautiful and colorful. I also noticed that the fall season is dry. In the Netherlands it is rainy and windy.
Also pumpkin patches are an American thing to go to in the fall, which is unknown in the Netherlands. For my Dutch friends, here you can find out what that is.
Of course fall is the time to make crafts. And this particular one was fun when I was little. My brother and I made cities with blocks, train tracks and LEGO’s. I made these a little different, but Little Munchkin was helping me and she loved wrapping the yarn. It was a little tricky to push the tooth picks into the acorns.
Here is what you need:
Material List:
- acorns (duh!), also with the “hat”. Doesn’t have to be attached.
- tooth picks
- scissors
- hot glue
- yarn
- beads (optional)
- permanent marker like Sharpies
How to do it:
- Choose 2 acorns for 1 puppet. Make a hole on one side of one acorn and on one side of the other acorn with the pointy part of a tooth pick or needle. Cut a tooth pick in half. Connect the acorns with the half tooth pick.
- Use a full length tooth pick for the arms. Use hot glue to glue the arms on top of the tummy part of the puppet. Let dry. Use yarn to wrap around the arms and tummy part to secure. You can use the same yarn to make a sweater.
- Use 2 tooth picks for the legs. Use a different color yarn to wrap around the tummy and legs for the pants.
- With the Sharpie you can draw a face.
- Optional you can glue beads on the ends of the tooth pick for the hands and feet or shoes, just to avoid poking little fingers in case the kids want to play with these cute dolls.
