All Things Dutch, Dutch Recipes with a Twist

How to make S’mores even better.

It was Christmas Eve in 2021. The forecast said it would 64F (18 C), which I had never experienced before. Would it be too crazy to have a Christmas Eve barbecue in the middle of winter in the middle of Iowa? We’ve never done that before (never lived in the Southern Hemisphere to celebrate Christmas on the beach). So why not! And then….let’s top it off with a bonfire and S’mores and a White Elephant Game.

What are S’mores?

A few years back when I went home to the Netherlands, I wanted to bring my friends and family some things from the USA. The summer before I was introduced to these things called S’mores.

The ingredients are easy: Graham Crackers (especially the cinnamon kind),thin chocolate bar (usually Hershey’s here in the US) and marshmallows. Then you need a long stick and a fire. People who don’t have a or cannot make a (bon)fire in their back yard, you could use one of these fun table top burners or this fancy one. Great for a winter treat as well.

At that time my friends never heard of S’mores before, so they were all over it.

By now, they know probably all about it(maybe from US movies and advertisement). It is hard to find things that are typical American gifts to give friends and family. Lately I’ve heard that different flavors of M&M’s are special at the moment.

So what do you do?

You poke a marshmallow (or 2) on a stick and keep it above a flame (not in it) for a few minutes until golden brown. Carefully put the marshmallow on a piece of graham cracker. On top of that add a piece of chocolate and another piece of Graham cracker. There you have your S’mores with gooey marshmallows and soft chocolate.

S’mores with a Dutch Twist

Funnily my American husband came with the idea and actually out of an emergency, to use other ingredients than the normal graham crackers or Hershey chocolate. We didn’t have the usual ingredients, so he found “stroopwafels”and Tony Chocolonely chocolate bars (my favorite is the Sea salt caramel).

I will post a picture soon when we will have another S’mores night. But for now: get those “stroopwafels” and Tony Chocolonely bars (available at Amazon. We have both of them at our local Whole Food store too).

Enjoy!
