Welcome to my first weekly DIY Projects to do during the Corona Virus Pandemic. Project #1: Face Mask.
In between taking care of the kids Zoom school schedules, making food, cleaning the house and blogging, I can find some time to do projects. I NEED to find time to do crafts, otherwise I’m going CRAAAZY!
Here is one, an important one! If you’d ask me to do this project 6 months ago, I would not have done it. But it’s necessary right now .You can not go into a grocery store without wearing one here in our town: A Face Mask!
This was one of the projects I had to do for our family. Even though the news reported different insights on this matter, I was starting to thinking logically here. Send all the real N-95 (or whatever they need and is approved) to the people who need it the most. All the medical staff and other care takers on the front lines.
What to do to protect ourselves during the Corona Virus Pandemic.
For all of us at home, we can still do something to be somewhat protected. Washing hands and stay 6 ft away from people, those are 2 very important things. Don’t go out if you don’t need to. Plan accordingly when to buy and what. If you do go out (mostly to the grocery store), clean the carts, go around people and wear a mask.
I made 5 masks. Even though our kids are not likely to go out. We’re not taking the risk to bring them to the store. Actually the kids thought they looked cool. It’s Anime-ish enough for our son and some of them are cute, so our youngest is wearing them when she’s playing in our backyard. Not really necessary, but she likes it!
How to make a Face Mask?
I used 2 layers: an old pillow case and cotton quilting fabric. I had some elastic left (sometimes, if you buy shoes online, they tie them together with thin elastic bands. That’s all I got).
Here are some links to different templates to use.
- This one is from the CDC website.
- This is the one (TIME-magazine) similar to what I used.
- The Washington Post has some tips and tricks for finding the right fabric.
- A different one here with easy step-by-step tutorial.
In the meantime there are so many different ways of making a Face Mask. I made this one a few weeks ago, but I might try one of the above links again to make them even better.
I tried to make a video, but recorded at the wrong time (I hit “record”, just when I put the camera down, thinking I stopped the camera) I might do it again!
For now, here is one from Hello Sewing. A different kind of mask than I made, but a very nice tutorial
Think logical. Think of others, stay healthy and safe! LOVE YOU ALL!!!
