Today was the day!!!! The performance, the team worked on for more than 6 months was happening today at Destination Imagination Globals Finals 2018 in Knoxville Tennessee. It was going to be a long day!
6:30 AM
Yes, it was 6:30 AM this morning. It took just a few minutes to get the girls up, but THEN they were SO awake and excited, it was hard to keep them quiet. We did our morning routine and got into the bus.
8:00 AM
On our way to drop the high school team off first. It was a confusing day. We had time to go to our materials to get them ready. The structure our team made, was placed around a tube of 3,5 inch diameter and luckily it fit…barely! Pfew!
10:15 AM
Back to the bus and off we went to see the high school team perform. They did okay, but they forgot some things (I heard about some costumes) an their scientific item was not working properly, but they knew that.
They were done! Time for us to go back and have lunch. It was warm outside and we found some shade to sit and eat our food: grilled chicken, brown rice, salad, cookies and fruit.
And some pin trading during lunch time.

It’s time to check-in the structure. The other team members got ready too, including getting dressed and their face paint.

Team check in. We had to re-arrange something on our expense report. Everything seems to be fine. We could go and sit at the reserved team manager spots. Now I was getting nervous. The appraiser started to talk and introduced the team. He told the audience about our special situation, being a Iowan team, competing in the state of Illinois.
And the 8 minutes started! Set up of all the props and materials. It’s going well! A little chaotic, but they seem confident, they speak clearly, they are funny. Then the structure is being crushed after the first weight dropped. Moving on! Little mistakes were happening, but the kids acted like professionals and found solutions on the spot to work things out.
It was done! Ready for today. Big hugs and high fives and a series of photos of the students in their costumes and posing like their character.
2:15 PM
Time to clean the space, throw away most of the back drop and props and bring back the things we still can use.
It’s EXPO time! In this area the kids could try out different things which were sponsored by some big companies, like NASA. Also robotics, drone flying, chemistry, doodling and making structures with wooden sticks. More of this later…I hope! It was too short for today.
4:00 PM
The bus was waiting for us and we loaded up the rest of our materials and headed back to the hotel. The teams went swimming and some students did some pin trading. After a shower it was time for dinner. Mexican food, yumm!
8:00 PM
We invited the boys over to our room to read the book “The thief of always” from school. The teacher gave a copy of the the book, so we could catch up with the rest of the class at school.
After that, they all watched the cooking show “Chopped” and then it was time to go to bed.
Another day awaits us tomorrow: Instant Challenge!
