Another day in Knoxville, Tennessee for Destination Imagination Globals Finals 2018. This is Day 4! Today is the Day for Instant Challenge. This is an important part for a good amount of points. Some teams can do a good job on their long term performance an not good at Instant Challenge or the other way around. With Instant Challenge the team doesn’t know what they need to do. It’s about teamwork, everyone needs to be involved and solve the challenge.
So here we go!
8:00 AM
We got up a little later. Getting all ready for the day. The bus was waiting to get us to the Convention Center. The kids could watch some more performances or go to the Expo area. The team managers were heading to the top of the convention center where the team managers have their own lounge area…ooooh, yeah!!! coffee, tea, pastries and ….green mood light!
11:30 AM
It was time to take a shuttle bus to the area where we had to sign in for Instant Challenge. In the shuttle, kids from Texas were asking us about the pins. It seemed that the door knocker pins from Illinois are really popular, especially the rare wolf knocker. Right before we went to Instant Challenge, we had some lunch nearby. And even at the lunch tent, kids from other states really wanted the wolf pin. I was in awe with beautiful shell pins I had seen somewhere.

1:00 PM
It was time to check in for our last challenge. Outside the Instant Challenge building was a lot going on, from Registration to getting pumped for the challenge and “building a tunnel” (see video). No bags, phones or other electronics were allowed in the building. After some songs like “YMCA” to get the kids ready, it was time to run through a tunnel into the building. Now it was time to be quiet and focus. We waited in a room until they called us. There were two white boards where the kids could write their favorite movie line and vine quote. There was also a USA and world map. J placed a sticker for us in Iowa. It was very lonely on the map….no other Iowa team, besides our high school team, made it to Globals Finals this year.
1:45 PM
It was time for the challenge. At this point of time, I cannot say much. The only thing I can say is, that they did well and it was fun to see the team communicate well with each other. I think the team work was great. The appraisers won’t tell you until tomorrow evening, how the team did this challenge.
2:15 PM
After the team came out of the “chill room”, we took some pictures and they could shine at the “TADA” stand (see video). It was still very warm, so the kids were allowed to buy a refreshment at Starbucks. Near that Starbucks was a place for Pin Trading. It was a fun moment when one of our chaperones, a DI alumni, rolled out her pin towel and at least 10 Chinese kids crawled around her and started screaming. I think she had fun trading with them;)
4:00 PM
Back to the bus. We drove the scenic route back to the hotel. We saw enormous houses with beautiful views of the Tennessee river. At the hotel the girls changed into their bathing suits, but realized later, that there was no time to swim, because….something needed to be made for the DUCT TAPE BALL!! What a great event at Destination Imagination Global Finals!
Then it was time for dinner and the bus left at 7:30 PM for the ball. A few students went to another party but came back around 8:30 PM, because most of the kids wanted to go swimming before they had to go to bed. The ball was a lot of fun. We saw tons of beautiful costumes, loud music and lots of dancing kids from all over the world.
9:00 PM
The girls were in the swimming pool an I had some time to make a video and continue blogging. It was time to go to bed…after a bag of popcorn and a cooking show of course.
